Aaaahhh, the Whale Rally in Plettenberg Bay! As bikers, this is one of our favourite events in the Plett calendar and we have been looking forward to it for months now. The Whale Rally took place this past weekend (14 – 16 June) and Amakaya Backpackers played host to a group of very enthusiastic bikers.
We camped at the actual Whale Rally this year, leaving the backpackers in the capable hands of our manager and headed out to the Keurbooms Caravan Park on Friday afternoon to set up camp, enjoy the atmosphere and get ready for the Friday night Whale Rally party. By the time we got to the main tent (around 8pm), it was already rocking with a live band. The party atmosphere was awesome – as only bikers can do – with impromptu arm wrestling and everyone excited for the weekend ahead.
Saturday dawned on our little campsite with beautiful views of the bay, as the bikers prepared for a well attended mass ride through town in aid of PAWS (Plett Animal Welfare Service), ending at Market Square Shopping Centre. Many bikers went their own way for the day, exploring the beautiful surroundings of Plettenberg Bay, riding out on day trips to Knysna or Tsitsikamma; while others returned to campsite for some serious rally shenanigans!
Saturday night was busy and vibey, with a R50 000 first prize, and everyone was in great spirits, rocking to the sound of Mad Brad’s Psycho Circus and other great DJs. As the evening was a colder one, the bonfires outside the tent were well used and added to the familiar “Whale Rally” feeling.
We had a really great time: well organised, great seeing bikers from all over South Africa, awesome atmosphere and beautiful location – thanks to Ulysses Garden Route for their organisation of this rally. See you all again next year!
