It’s South Africa’s National Marine Month, and we’re thrilled to be celebrating some of the incredible reasons why Plettenberg Bay is an ideal destination for ocean, nature and marine life.

SHARKS AND SEALS ON ROBBERG

The marine life in Plettenberg Bay is absolutely astounding. Sharks and seals, whales and dolphins, and reefs teeming with fish, shysharks, nudibranchs and every colour of soft coral imaginable.  Making waves recently are the incredible sightings of Great White sharks off Robberg Peninsula. Although this is nothing new, fortunate hikers and trail runners have been treated to excellent sightings these magnificent, but vulnerable sharks.  Read more:

SUMMER WATERSPORTS IN PLETTENBERG BAY

SIX BLUE FLAG BEACHES IN PLETTENBERG BAY

If there is one thing that sets Plettenberg Bay apart from the rest of the Garden Route, it’s our beaches. Kilometres of sandy white beaches, many within the protective arm of Robberg Peninsula, all waiting to be explored and enjoyed. Six of Plett’s beaches recently received international Blue Flag status: Nature’s Valley, Keurbooms Beach, Singing Kettle Beach, the Dunes Beach, Lookout Beach and Robberg Beach, and two of our boats received Blue Flag boat status. The only town in the country to receive more accreditation is the city of Cape Town.  Read more: 

PLETT HOPE SPOT

Visitors to Plett are continuously surprised & delighted by the natural splendour that surrounds us and one of Plett’s crown jewels would have to be the marine environment. The bay of Plettenberg Bay is sheltered by the iconic Robberg Peninsula, making it the ideal place to play for watersports enthusiasts and nature lovers. Plett is as one of only 5 International Hope Spots in Africa, and with good reason! The aim of the Plett Hope Spot is to support the proposed linkage of the Tstisikamma Marine Protected Area with the Robberg Marine Protected Area – a massive expanse of coast and will be supported by established non-profit organisations through science, tourism, education and sustainable development. Read more:

MARINE BIG FIVE IN PLETT

We are so fortunate in Plettenberg Bay to not only have the Big 5 of Game Viewing, but also the Big Five of Marine Animals! If you are backpacking or visiting the Garden Route, stop in Plett and get some land and marine Big Five sightings in!
